By now, it's common knowledge that Hans-Joachim Watzke's time with Borussia Dortmund is set to be up in the summer of 2025. Dortmund's current CEO has seen the club through sporting highs and financial lows, most notably helping the club navigate the early 2000's financial crisis it found itself in, and helping to facilitate the era of success under Jürgen Klopp.

With Watzke taking a step back this summer, and fully stepping down the following year, there will certainly be some level of change and upheaval that the club will experience in this time across other positions. These changes will also notably affect the likes of Matthias Sammer. Sammer has been an adviser for Borussia Dortmund since 2018.

In an interview with BILD, Watzke was questioned about Sammer's future at the club now that his own future has been decided. Watzke, while not clearly stating Sammer will depart, did indicate that their positions at Dortmund are linked:

"It's [Sammer's and Watzke's position] linked, so it's mutually dependent...In principle, the contract states that he is my advisor."

Indeed, as Watzke states, their positions are mutually deopendent as Sammer is directly his adviser. This alludes to the idea that separation will be the natural step, unless Watzke's successor perhaps chooses to extend the same offer to Sammer as well.

Of course, there is cearly no guarantee that either Sammer will wish to continue, or that there will be a clear necessity for his services. Each and every continued step that Dortmund make in restructuring their hierarchy may see new faces come to the fore with fresh ideas that perhaps look forward instead of leaning on the advice from a member of the old regime.
