A late brace from Donyell Malen helped the Netherlands book their place in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, but Marcel Sabitzer and Austria fell to an agonising defeat to Salih Özcan and Türkiye.

The Euro 2024 round of 16 concluded on Tuesday with two entertaining matches as the Netherlands and Türkiye set up a quarterfinals tie. Donyell Malen came up with two vital goals for Ronald Koeman's side as they claimed a 3-0 win over Romania.

The Borussia Dortmund forward came off the bench and made a decisive impact to make sure of the win for his side after Cody Gakpo's early opener. Malen tapped the ball home from the Liverpool star's cut-back in the 83rd minute. He then made a sublime run into the box and dribbled past two defenders before finding the bottom corner to seal the win in stoppage time.

It was an excellent performance off the bench from Malen, who made the case for a place in the Netherlands starting XI for their quarterfinal clash.

Euro 2024 heartbreak for Marcel Sabitzer, Salih Özcan and Türkiye in the quarterfinals

Going up against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals will be Türkiye, after they stunned Austria in a pulsating last 16 contest. Türkiye came off the blocks quickly and opened the scoring inside the opening minute, with Merih Demiral finding the back of the net after Austria failed to clear their lines from a corner. The defender was on target again at the hour mark, heading home from another corner to double his side’s lead.

Austria responded seven minutes later, with Michael Gregoritsch halving the deficit after a well-taken corner from Marcel Sabitzer. And Ralf Rangnick’s side came ever so close to finding an equaliser, but Mert Günok pulled off an incredible save to keep out Christoph Baumgartner’s header.

Marcel Sabitzer played the entire 90 minutes for Austria, while Salih Özcan came off the bench in the 58th minute and helped Türkiye see out the win and set up a quarterfinal clash against the Netherlands.
