Borussia Dortmund’s transfer plans continue to take shape as the club reportedly looks for possible solutions to address the needs of the squad. The rebuild in question has been stretched across both the upper hierarchy, namely the appointment of Lars Ricken and Sven Mislintat to Director of Sport and Squd Planner respectively, to now Nuri Sahin replacing Edin Terzić as head coach.

Many have guessed at what sort of effect this hierarchical change would have on the squad, and we seem to be seeing that take shape as reports of various players being linked with the club continue to come in. Most recently, Spox has indicated that VFL Wolfsburg’s Patrick Wimmer is now a target for the club.

According to the report, Wimmer is valued at 15 million euros. In addition to Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Juventus are also interested in the right winger.

Wimmer’s Bundesliga season was nothing to write home about, with the Austrian winger scoring 2 goals in 14 appearances. This was in part caused by both injury and illness as Wimmer missed 17 games total, 16 of which were due to a syndesmotic ligament tear.

In seasons past, Wimmer had shown he was capable of top-notch performances, as his time with Arminia Bielefeld before his move to Wolfsburg proves. Wimmer was lauded for his talent as a technical dribbler and his ability to be a creative outlet for his side. At 23 he’s still young and could benefit from moving to a team like Dortmund which would offer a higher caliber of teammates to play with, thus possibly allowing him to flourish.

That being said, the opposite could also be true and Wimmer could struggle at Dortmund, especially after a season like last at Wolfsburg. Depending on the price, Wimmer could be a low-risk option from a depth perspective should Dortmund look to bolster on the wing as he is a flexible player. The club should however also look for starting options that could bring top-notch quality from the jump should Jadon Sancho and Donyell Malen not return for the coming season rather than banking on the success of a player like Wimmer long-term.
