Borussia Dortmund’s transfer plans for this summer continue to focus on the midfield as one of the priority positions in need of change. The performances, or underperformances of both Germany international Emre Can and Turkey international Salih Özcan have prompted the club to rethink who they have available to deploy in the middle of the park.

Numerous names have come to the fore as options for Dortmund to target as part of this rebuild. The most recent player to be mentioned is Danish international Pierre Emile Højbjerg.

Formerly of Bayern Munich, The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had been a stalwart for both his club and country for many years. This seems to have changed under current Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou, with the player taking a back seat to other options. He has remained one of Denmark's most important players, however.

Currently valued at 18 million euros, Højbjerg has one year left on his contract, possibly making him an affordable transfer should Dortmund actually look to target the player. Despite making most of his appearances as a substitute, Højbjerg still showed he’s capable of putting in a solid shift, with the player excelling in terms of progressive passes (9.2 per 90) while still attending to his defensive duties, which could bring welcome diversity to Dortmund's midfield options.

As with much of the speculation going around this early on in the transfer period, it remains to be seen if Dortmund will actually make a move for Højbjerg. He does provide an interesting option for the club to consider, however, and falls within the affordable parameters of the transfers the club seems to be targeting this window. It is certainly clear that quality reinforcements are necessary to either replace or challenge the current crop, and Højbjerg offers an experienced, leadership-quality option to help in this respect.
