The future of Borussia Dortmund icon Marco Reus continues to be a topic of debate as the club face what’s expected to be a significant rebuild this coming summer. Recent reports from Sky Sport suggest that the club will not be offering the club’s former captain a contract extension once his current deal comes to an end.

Extending Reus for another year and allowing him to then retire at his boyhood club seems like the obvious answer for the club to pursue, especially considering the player’s contributions to the club on and off the pitch, as well as the loyalty he’s shown the club to this point in his career. As more reports begin to surface contrary to this, it’s natural that the player’s future will be a topic of debate amongst onlookers.

The speculation in question however remains just that: speculation. As of now, the club have allegedly scheduled talks with the player, which are set to take place in April or May; a very similar situation to the one that both Reus and Mats Hummels found themselves in last season.

It’s seems very far-fetched to think that Dortmund would allow the club’s talisman to simply finish his career somewhere else. Such a turn of events would frankly speaking be a travesty, and set a very unfavorable precedent for other players to consider when they weigh the long term future with the club.

The report has also indicated that Reus has attracted interest from both MLS and Turkey. Despite this, it just doesn’t seem right to picture Reus in any other kit than the black and yellow of Borussia Dortmund. It is my hope that the club feels the same way and ensures that the player's legacy with the club is preserved and properly appreciated with a contract that allows him to play the final days of his career with the club of his heart.
