Borussia Dortmund are on the verge of completing the signing of Waldemar Anton, with the VfB Stuttgart centre-back set to replace Mats Hummels.

Waldemar Anton could well be Borussia Dortmund’s first signing of the summer transfer window, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the defender has decided to make the switch to the club. The Black and Yellows were competing with Bayer Leverkusen for the 27 year old’s signature. And it looks like Anton has rejected interest from Xabi Alonso’s side in favour of a move to BVB.

Anton has a release clause of 22 million euros in his contract, which Borussia Dortmund plan to trigger soon. The Germany international played a crucial role in Stuttgart’s second place finish in the Bundesliga this season, and will now hope to make a similar impact at the Westfalenstadion.

Borussia Dortmund desperately needed a new centre-back following the club’s decision to not offer Mats Hummels a contract extension. The future of Niklas Süle also remains uncertain, and Anton is expected to partner Nico Schlotterbeck in the heart of the BVB defence next season.

Anton showcased his qualities in the Bundesliga this season for Stuttgart, and also earned his spot in the Germany squad for Euro 2024. He is a no-nonsense defender and is also comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Replacing the outgoing Mats Hummels will certainly not be an easy task, especially after he rolled back the years with his performances this season. But Waldemar Anton certainly ticks all the boxes, and Borussia Dortmund will hope that he can help spearhead their charge for the Bundesliga title next season.
