Bundesliga Champions League round-up: Dortmund and Leverkusen dazzle as Leipzig and Munich are left frustrated
With five Bundesliga clubs representing the German top flight in this year's iteration of the Champions League, each club will be looking to make an impression on the competition. Over the course of matchday two, German clubs put on a mixed showing, with some of the results proving to be quite surprising.
Borussia Dortmund:
Dortmund were the biggest winners in terms of score-line, with Die Schwarzgelben absolutely demolishing Celtic 7-1 in their first home game of the competition. Goals courtesy of Karim Adeyemi, Emre Can, Felix Nmecha, and Serhou Guirassy assured a strong result for the Black and Yellows after a less convincing win against Club Brugge in their first outing.
Dortmund currently sits very comfortably at the pinnacle of the standings after this win, with 10 goals for and 1 goal against. These stats may prove very important once Dortmund comes up against some of the tougher opposition the group stage will have to offer including the likes of Real Madrid and an in-form Barcelona. Dortmund currently sit first in terms of teams set to qualify straight for the round of 16.
Bayer Leverkusen:
Leverkusen, like Dortmund, also sit in a pole position to advance to the round of 16 directly. Two wins out of two see Leverkusen in third (overall standings).
While not as high scoring as Dortmund so far, the club's five goals for and none against is imposing, and their 1-0 win over an in-form AC Milan side shows that Xabi Alonso is still working his magic at the club, and that they are a force to be reckoned with. Largely unchanged from last season, Leverkusen has a squad that can really cause havoc in the Champions League this season.
RB Leipzig:
RB Leipzig sits in the elimination spots (29th). A 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid and then a shocking 3-2 defeat this time around to Juventus put the German club in a tough position, making their most likely chance of advancing the playoff positions. It won't get any easier for them as their next opponents are Liverpool and Inter.
Bayern Munich:
After an imposing 9-2 win against Dinamo Zagreb on the first matchday, Bayern suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Unai Emery's Aston Villa, which saw the Bavarian club drop into 15th (playoff position).
Bayern's run in the next two games will not be easy ones, with Barcelona and an in-form Benfica waiting to take them on. It is expected however that Bayern will haul themselves back into qualification alongside Dortmund and Leverkusen.
VFB Stuttgart:
Stuttgart’s current position (25th) puts them in jeopardy of elimination, but the club's position hardly reflects the club’s efforts in the competition so far. After a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in their opening game at the Bernabeu, the scoreline very much didn’t reflect the effort put in by Stuttgart, with the club holding on to a draw for most of the game.
In their follow-up game against Sparta Praha, Stuttgart managed to get a draw, which puts them just beyond the playoff positions at this time. Some tough opponents in the form of Juventus, Atalanta and Paris Saint-Germain still await.
