Champions League Group F: Borussia Dortmund through to the last 16 with great opportunity to finish top
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund are already through to the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and will now hope to finish as Group F winners.
With a 3-1 win over AC Milan on Tuesday evening, Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16. The Black and Yellows now hold an unassailable five-point lead over both Newcastle United and AC Milan in the so called group of death, and they are also three points clear of second placed Paris Saint-Germain.
While it will be all to play for on matchday six for the other three teams, Borussia Dortmund can go into their home game against Paris Saint-Germain knowing that a point is all they need to finish top in Group F. Winning the group would be a great achievement for Edin Terzic's side, as they were written off by many, especially after poor performances in the first two games.
Defeat to PSG at home on matchday six would see Borussia Dortmund drop down to second place due to their inferior head-to-head record. And a second placed finish in Group F would mean that BVB would have to face one of the other group winners in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
PSG needed a controverstial 98th minute penalty from Kylian Mbappe to rescue a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday. They need a win to guarantee a spot in the last 16. But even a draw or defeat would see them go through depending on the result in the other game on matchday six.
Newcastle United will host AC Milan on matchday six with the two teams currently level on five points. The English Premier League side would go through to the round of 16 with a win and a PSG defeat or draw. While AC Milan would need a win and a PSG defeat to qualify for the knockout stage.
