Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with Edin Terzic after the 41 year old made the decision to step down from his role as head coach.

In a decision that comes as a big surprise, Edin Terzic has left his post as Borussia Dortmund head coach. The boyhood BVB fan made the decision to resign on Wednesday, and leaves the club with immediate effect. Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Sahin is the favourite to replace Terzic, having joined the club as assistant coach in January.

Reflecting on his decision, Terzic said he felt that the club needed a change in the dugout. "It was a huge honour to lead this great club to a DFB-Pokal victory and most recently to a Champions League final. After the final at Wembley, I asked those in charge for a chat because after ten years at BVB, five of them as part of the coaching team and two and a half as head coach, I feel that the new season should be accompanied with someone else on the touchline. I only ever wish Borussia Dortmund the very best."

While Terzic led Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final, the team's performances in the Bundesliga this season left a lot to be desired. And while a fifth place finish was enough to qualify for the Champions League, Terzic did face plenty of criticism from supporters.

Terzic came ever so close to ending BVB's decade long wait to win the Bundesliga title last season, and led the club to DFB-Pokal victory in 2021.

With Terzic deciding to step down, Borussia Dortmund's search for some stability at the coaching level continues. The Black and Yellows have been looking for that consistency since Jürgen Klopp's departure in 2015.

The likelihood is that Sahin will step up to become Borussia Dortmund club's new head coach, having already gained coaching experience at Antalyaspor. Sven Bender, who also returned to BVB in January, could stay on as part of the coaching staff.
