Borussia Dortmund had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Wolfsburg in a game that was dominated by protests against foreign investments in the DFL.

It certainly didn't make for pretty viewing, but Borussia Dortmund managed to keep their unbeaten start to 2024 intact away to Wolfsburg. The Black and Yellows were second best for the majority of the game, and were lucky to come away with a 1-1 draw in the end.

Niclas Füllkrug's early opener was canceled out by Yannick Gerhardt in the second-half, and neither side was able to find a winning goal in the end. Both sides' rhythm was also seriously affected by the tennis balls being thrown onto the pitch by the two sets of fans. There were eight stoppages in play, resulting in more than 20 minutes of extra time over the two halves.

The in-form Donyell Malen was left out of the BVB starting XI due to a minor knee issue, as he made way for Julian Brandt. Jadon Sancho also returned to the team, in place of compatriot Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.

Borussia Dortmund made a shaky start to proceedings, with Gregor Kobel having to be alert in the early stages. But they still managed to draw first blood as Niclas Füllkrug opened the scoring on the rebound after Marco Reus' shot was saved.

The rest of the first-half was a stop-start affair, with multiple stoppages in play caused by tennis balls being thrown onto the pitch by Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund supporters in protest against foreign investments in the DFL. Although Wolfsburg did have a couple of really good openings just before the break, with Kevin Behrens hitting the post before firing wide after being played through.

Wolfsburg continued to dominate proceedings following the start of the second-half. And while Gregor Kobel managed to fend off the home side on a couple of occasions, he was beaten in the 63rd minute as Yannick Gerhardt took advantage of some chaotic defending to head the ball home from close range after a corner.

Both teams had half-chances to score a late winning goal. But they had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the end. The result is certainly not ideal for Borussia Dortmund, even if it keeps their unbeaten streak alive. Edin Terzic will hope to see a much-improved performance from his side against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday.
