With Borussia Dortmund having a lengthy list of departures from the club this season, it’s always interesting to see where some of these players eventually end up, especially those who leave on a free contract. Marius Wolf was one of those departures, and it looks like the player will be staying in the Bundesliga.

Wolf, who initially signed for Dortmund from Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018/19 season for a fee of 5 million euros, has signed for Bavarian side FC Augsburg. The 29 year old was used mainly as an option off the bench for BVB as a winger and as a right back.

Over the course of his stint with Dortmund, Wolf never really established himself as a nailed-on starter for the club and went out on loan twice to both Hertha Berlin and FC Köln. Despite this, he was always willing to be deployed wherever the club needed him to play, and he showed effort when on the pitch.

At Dortmund, Wolf's "successors" are Julian Ryerson and new signing Yan Couto. Ryerson signed from Union Berlin in January of 2023, and quickly made the position his own. Couto, coming in off an exemplary season with Girona, will also be a great boost to Dortmund's fullback depth.

The deal with Augsburg is set or include a contract until 2027, which will see Wolf playing in Germany’s top flight for some years yet. Previous reports had suggested the player had offers from Saudi Arabia to consider, but it would seem the player’s prerogative was to stay in Germany based on these developments.

Wolf's move to Augsburg will give him the opportunity to establish himself as a first-team player once again in Germany's top flight. The separation between himself and Dortmund has thus worked out in the best way possible for all parties involved, with Wolf being able to continue to play football at a high level, and Dortmund being able to restructure in the fullback position; a position that has needed work for a couple of years now.
