Despite playing the better football for the majority of the 90 minutes, Borussia Dortmund fell short in the Champions League final, losing 2-0 to Real Madrid.

It was a case of what could have been for Borussia Dortmund as they were made to rue their missed chances against Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League. Despite looking out of sorts for the opening 70 minutes, Carlo Ancelotti's side managed to find a way like they so often do and pulled off a win after hanging on for so long.

Goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinícius Jr. proved to be decisive as Real Madrid won their 15th Champions League title, and ensured that Borussia Dortmund's season ended in heartbreak.

Borussia Dortmund were the dominant team right from the first whistle, with their high press and intensity catching Real Madrid by surprise. The first real chance of the game fell to Julian Brandt in the 14th minute, but the playmaker was unable to control Niclas Füllkrug's pass in time and sent his effort wide as a result.

Karim Adeyemi then had a golden opportunity to give Borussia Dortmund the lead. But a woeful touch let him down after he was played through on goal. Füllkrug then hit the post moments later, before Adeyemi forced a good save from Thibaut Courtois.

BVB continued their dominance as the game inched towards the half-time interval, and Courtois was forced into action again in the 41st minute by Marcel Sabitzer's shot from the edge of the box. On the scoreline, though, there was nothing to separate the two sides going into the half-time break.

Real Madrid upped the ante slightly in the second-half, and Gregor Kobel had to be alert to parry away Toni Kroos' free-kick. Dani Carvajal also came close twice for the Spanish giants.

Borussia Dortmund also had some lively moments going forward, while keeping things tight defensively. But a lapse in concentration from the BVB defence allowed Real Madrid to take the lead in the 74th minute with Carvajal heading home from Kroos' corner.

The goal completely took away Borussia Dortmund's momentum, and Kobel had to make three big saves to prevent Real Madrid from putting the game to bed. But the Swiss shot-stoppper stood no chance in the 83rd minute when Vinícius Jr. took advantage of Ian Maatsen's woeful pass to double Real Madrid's lead.

Despite huffing and puffing in the closing stages, Borussia Dortmund were unable to mount a comeback and their dream of winning the Champions League for the first time since 1997 ended in tears.
