Highly rated midfielder Kjell Wätjen set for Borussia Dortmund contract extension
Borussia Dortmund are reportedly set to hand a long-term contract extension to talented young midfielder Kjell Wätjen.
After making a strong impression during Borussia Dortmund's mid-season training camp in Marbella, Kjell Wätjen is now set to be rewarded with his first professional contract. This is being reported by BILD, who add that the midfielder is on the verge of signing a long-term contract with the Black and Yellows.
Wätjen is rated very highly at Borussia Dortmund, and has been one of the best performers in the U-19s team this season. He is capable of playing in a variety of different positions in midfield, and has primarily been used in the box-to-box role by U-19s head coach Mike Tullberg. He has ten goals and nine assists to his name in 27 appearances across all competitions.
The 18 year old got his first glimpse of the first-team in Marbella, and has since made the bench for Edin Terzic's side on three occasions.
The tabloid claims that several big clubs from across Europe were interested in signing Wätjen, and he was even on the verge of a move to RB Salzburg not long ago. But he decided to stay at Borussia Dortmund, and has now committed his long-term future to the club.
Kjell Wätjen will certainly be one of the players to watch in the coming months, as he looks to break into the Borussia Dortmund first-team. And if he continues to perform as he has done so far this season, he will no doubt get his opportunity before long.
