DM: Pascal Groß - Club captain Emre Can could find himself out of the starting XI following the arrival of Pascal Groß. At 33, he is coming off the best season of his career and will be responsible for dictating play and offering protection to the back-line. His ability to create chances will also be a vital asset.

AM: Julian Brandt - With Marco Reus gone, Brandt is now the longest serving BVB player in the squad. Having gotten the number 10 jersey and the vice-captaincy, his contribution will undoubtedly increase. He will be the main chance creator and will look to lead from the front.

CM: Marcel Sabitzer - Sabitzer was one of the best BVB players of the second half of last season. That strong form could make him among one of the first names on the team sheet. He is expected to be the crucial link between midfield and attack. Groß could also be an option for the number eight role, with Can slotting in behind him.
