How can Borussia Dortmund overhaul their porous defence
By PRATIK SAHU
Playing Karim Adeyemi in his best position
With seven goals and one assist for club and country (Germany U21), Adeyemi has started the season in a blistering form and will be hoping to continue in such a manner as his time so far at Dortmund has coincided with minor injuries in phases, being played in unsuitable positions by the coaches and a lack of consistency. But this season, he has carried his goalscoring exploits for the national team at the club level too.
The major reason behind this is the fact that he is playing in his familiar attacking position as a left-sided inside forward. Under Terzic last season, he was deployed in a role where he had to focus a lot on his defensive duties too, leading to sacrificing his usual way of playing.
This season, he has mostly played in his preferred position. But against Stuttgart, he was asked to contribute more defensively which prevented him from affecting the game like he would like to in the attacking third.
Conclusion
Though the above suggested tweaks might not look like revolutionary ideas, they can be crucial as in today's football a team can win or lose the league due to such minor differences. Borussia Dortmund are still very much a team in progress. But quick improvements are needed if they are to compete for the top honours. A good defence is imperative for winning the Bundesliga. Just ask Bayer Leverkusen, who won the league last term by conceding just 24 goals in total.
