Mats Hummels' next destination is increasingly likely to be Italy, with Bologna said to be leading the race to sign the former Borussia Dortmund defender.
After leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season, Mats Hummels is currently a free agent. Several clubs have been linked with a move for the veteran centre-back in recent weeks, including Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid and AC Milan. But it appears that Bologna are leading the race for his signature.
Mats Hummels could play Champions League football next season with Bologna
According to Sky Sport, Bologna have already submitted a contract offer to Hummels. They are willing to hand the 35 year old an initial one-year contract and an annual salary of around three million euros. Bologna CEO Claudio Fenucci recently revealed during a press conference that Hummels is currently mulling his options, and they are waiting for a final decision on his future.
Hummels is coming off an excellent campaign with Borussia Dortmund and played a crucial role in their run to the UEFA Champions League final last season. He rolled back the years with his performances and showcased his quality at the top level. But the BVB bosses decided against extending his expiring contract, and he is now considering his options.
It still remains to be seen where Mats Hummels will play next season. The former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich defender is expected to play abroad for the first time in his career. Hummels made a total of 508 appearances for Borussia Dortmund before leaving the club at the end of last season.
