What Jadon Sancho will bring to Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund fans need no reminders of Jadon Sancho’s game-changing ability and sublime incisiveness, both in terms of his playmaking and finishing chances. His speed and dribbling skills will be vital in helping the team create more chances. And when the Englishman has a good full-back who can overlap and progress play with him, he can comfortably cut inside and set up his teammates.
Sancho’s ability to deliver quality through balls and forward passes will also be crucial as it will play directly into the strength of Niclas Füllkrug, who has often been starved of these types of opportunities. Although it will be interesting to see how the two link-up on the pitch, as Füllkrug often likes to drop deep to collect the ball. And some of Sancho's best moments at BVB came when he combined with Erling Haaland, who prefers to run in behind defences.
With Donyell Malen possibly leaving the club this window, Jadon Sancho will likely walk straight into the starting lineup. It will be up to Edin Terzic to utilise the forward's skillset to the maximum to turn around the season.
Some might argue that the club is making a short-sighted decision at the risk of harming the playing time of other first-team players, especially considering Sancho hasn't played at all since August and will no doubt be rusty. However, Terzic is under pressure to deliver in the new year and the club can’t afford to miss out on Europe’s elite competition next season.
There is very little doubt that Jadon Sancho can help the team get back to their best if he can rediscover his brilliant form. But there are also other points worth addressing, and the deal does come with a fair bit of risk for Borussia Dortmund. The pressure will certainly be on Sancho to prove his doubters wrong, and if he can do that, this deal will be a win-win for both the club and the player.
