Karim Adeyemi, Ian Maatsen on target as Borussia Dortmund see off Union Berlin challenge
Borussia Dortmund managed to get the three points against Union Berlin by claiming an unconvincing 2-0 win, courtesy of goals from Karim Adeyemi and Ian Maatsen.
It wasn't pretty by any means, but Borussia Dortmund got the job done against Union Berlin to stay fourth in the Bundesliga standings. Karim Adeyemi opened the scoring in the first-half with his first goal of the season in the Bundesliga, before Ian Maatsen made sure of the three points in the 90th minute.
Despite the win, the Black and Yellows were outplayed by a resilient, yet wasteful Union Berlin side. The Berliners had their fair share of chances. But Borussia Dortmund's efficiency in front of goal made the difference in the end.
Borussia Dortmund welcomed Niklas Süle back into the starting XI, with the centre-back fully fit again following his bout with illness. Karim Adeyemi replaced the suspended Donyell Malen, as Marco Reus also dropped out of the side despite his two assists against Hoffenheim.
Things looked ugly in the early stages for Borussia Dortmund, with Union Berlin coming close to scoring on a few ocassions. But not for the first time this season, some poor finishing by the opponent came to BVB's rescue. And Karim Adeyemi made the most of it by giving Edin Terzic's side the lead with a fine finish from the edge of the box.
The second-half was more of the same, with Union Berlin doing most of the attacking but struggling to make the most of their chances. Borussia Dortmund did not offer much going forward, and mostly just relied on counter-attacking opportunities to cause problems to the home side. And after fending off waves of Union Berlin attacks, BVB finally managed to double their lead in the 90th minute.
Ian Maatsen scored his first goal in BVB colours after picking Josip Juranović's pocket before firing the ball home to make sure of the three points.
It was certainly not pretty by any means, but Borussia Dortmund got the job done and ended their winless run. The win means that BVB remain one point clear of RB Leipzig, but Terzic and co. must be wary that their upcoming opponents may not be as wasteful and forgiving as Union Berlin were with their chances.
