Nuri Sahin has set his sights on another successful season in the UEFA Champions League for Borussia Dortmund.
After overcoming all expectations and making it all the way to the final of the UEFA Champions League last season, Borussia Dortmund will be determined to make another deep run in the competition this time around.
Nuri Sahin: The UEFA Champions League deserves the utmost respect
Nuri Sahin is looking forward to leading Borussia Dortmund in Europe's premier club competition, and has lofty goals for their campaign. During the press conference ahead of BVB's Champions League opener away to Club Brugge, the 36 year old said: "I'm looking forward to my first game as head coach on this stage. The Champions League is something special. Whether it's your debut or you've already played 100 games, this competition deserves the utmost respect."
"As last year's finalists, we are self-confident and have an obligation [to perform well]. Borussia Dortmund is a brand in Europe. We want to live up to that and progress to the next round."
Borussia Dortmund enjoyed a stunning run in the UEFA Champions League last season, overcoming the so-called group of death, before knocking out the likes of PSV Eindhoven, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain en route to the final, where they suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Real Madrid.
With a new format now in place in the UEFA Champions League, there are plenty of unknowns for teams to deal with. But for Nuri Sahin and Borussia Dortmund, the goal remains the same - to make it to the next round.
The Black and Yellows will go up against the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona during the league phase of the Champions League this season. But before that, they will begin their campaign with a trip to Belgium to face Club Brugge.
