Opinion: Borussia Dortmund should allow Maximilian Beier to start alongside Serhou Guirassy in attack

Borussia Dortmund haven’t seen much of Maximilian Beier in black and yellow since his signing. Considering recent results, we should be seeing him get more chances going forward.

The game against Stuttgart could’ve been a good opportunity to try this, particularly with how ineffective Brandt was in the attacking midfield position. Stuttgart controlled large swaths of the game against Dortmund, and pulling Brandt to add Beier into the front line could’ve shifted the lineup to a midfield partnership of Sabitzer and Pascal Grob, and probably would’ve allowed for Dortmund to play a bit more on the counter when Stuttgart came marauding forward.

According to Şahin, his reasoning for not bringing Beier on had to do with stabilizing the midfield:

"We wanted to close the center because we had no control of the game there at all. This has nothing to do with Maxi."

Nuri Şahin

The instability in midfield was in part due to playing Sabitzer out wide for a large portion of the first half, and the ineffective nature of the front line that did little to stop Stuttgart from playing out from under what was non-existent pressure at times.

Şahin has already shown a willingness to experiment with how this Dortmund side can play, switching formation mid-game on more than one occasion. He is also very much familiar with playing a system with two strikers up front as he did at times at Antalyaspor.

No matter what changes Şahin and Dortmund choose to implement ahead of the game against Bochum this coming Friday, a reaction will be necessary for them to quickly get back on track and put this Stuttgart game behind them. Beier possibly playing in a front two with Guirassy could work to quite a few key player’s strengths and allow for Şahin to give Beier the chance to be an impact player for the club.
