Opinion: Borussia Dortmund shrewd in targeting Pascal Groß
Borussia Dortmund is less than two weeks away from the most important game in the club's recent history, namely the Champions League final against Real Madrid. Even still, plans for next season are very much underway with squad planning in full swing.
According to reports, Dortmund are looking to reinforce in the midfield, with Brighton’s German midfielder Pascal Groß on their radar as a possible target. Dortmund’s interest reportedly revolves around the German international's ability to play as a defensive midfielder; a position that Dortmund needs to revamp.
Groß is a very capable midfielder able to play a defensive role as mentioned, but he can also play as a more conventional central midfielder as well as an attacking midfielder. His 4 goals and 10 assists this season in the Premier League alone for Brighton is a very impressive haul for the 32 year old player. His versatility is also a very enticing facet to keep in mind, as it would give Edin Terzić some tactical flexibility going into next season.
In addition to this, Groß is said to have been a Dortmund fan in his childhood and still has a soft spot for the club. Having players with an affinity for the team is also important for a club looking to have players leave everything on the pitch for the club they represent.
It remains to be seen just what the asking price might be on Brighton’s end, but with his contract expiring in 2025, he could be available for a very reasonable fee. Groß’s experience could be valuable to Dortmund next season should they choose to bring him in as a squad player, as re-vamping the squad from a depth standpoint will be important going into next season as well.
The move, if it occurs will be judged on how much a financial hit Dortmund take, but also what role they bring the player to fill. From a squad planning standpoint, having a tactically flexible and experienced players such as Groß could help to steer the team towards success next season.
