Predicted Borussia Dortmund lineup for Freiburg clash

Borussia Dortmund will go up against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Friday as they look to return to winning ways.

Edin Terzic will hope to see a much improved attacking display from his Borussia Dortmund side as they take on SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Friday evening. The BVB attack was blunted rather easily by Heidenheim last week. But reinforcements are on their way, with Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyemi and Marco Reus among the players who are back in training.

Here we take a look at how Borussia Dortmund could line up against SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Friday evening.

Gregor Kobel is back in training and should slot straight back into the starting XI against Freiburg. The Swiss shot-stopper will hope for a straightforward clean-sheet against a Freiburg attack that has struggled for goals this season.

We will see a change at right-back following Thomas Meunier's departure from the club. Julian Ryerson is unlikely to be rushed back into the starting XI, so one of Marius Wolf and Niklas Süle will likely start at right-back. Süle featured at centre-back against Heidenheim and has more match rhythm under his belt. Wolf has only been used sporadically so far this season.

Mats Hummels could make his return to the starting XI and partner Nico Schlotterbeck in the heart of the Borussia Dortmund defence on Friday. Ian Maatsen will start at left-back once again, aiming to build on his promising start to life at BVB.

Salih Özcan's poor start to 2024 could prompt a change in defensive midfield, with Emre Can fit again and ready to return to the starting XI. The BVB captain certainly needs to get back into match rhyhtm in time for the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven later this month.

Marcel Sabitzer will start in the number eight role, with Julian Brandt in contention to return to the starting XI in attacking midfield after recovering from his illness.

Brandt's return would probably mark the end of the 4-4-2 formation experiment, with Youssoufa Moukoko the likelier of the two strikers to drop to the bench. Niclas Füllkrug is expected to start up front, with Donyell Malen and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens on the wings.
