Gio Reyna’s situation at Borussia Dortmund seems to be becoming foggier by the day. As of this morning, the club has announced that the US international will not be joining the club on their Asia tour and will be re-joining his teammates once they return to Dortmund.

At face value, this may simply be a case of logistics, but it’s clear that Reyna’s future is far from certain in black and yellow. The decision could be seen as the club giving Gio the opportunity to negotiate with any interested parties. Recent strong links to Lyon’s Rayan Cherki also dictate that Reyna’s days in Dortmund may be numbered and that the club could see him depart this summer.

Per Sky Sport in particular, Reyna is said to “ have no future” with the club, and that they would be open to him leaving for pastures new. The club mentioned as possibly interested is Marseille, a club that could re-kindle interest first reported back during the January transfer window.

A move for Reyna at this point in time is the only logical option, especially if the club does indeed sign Cherki and is fixated on seeing him leave. The player is young and needs minutes, something that has very much been lacking in Dortmund for a plethora of reasons.

A move to Marseille in particular could be a good way for the young American international to reinvigorate his career. Ligue 1 is a step below the Bundesliga in terms of intensity and Marseille in particular could offer a lower-pressure environment. Gio could get time on the pitch and flourish under a coach like Roberto De Zerbi, who has shown with his time at Brighton that he has a knack for getting the best out of young players.

Whatever Gio’s next move is, it will be a pivotal one in his career. His previous loan move to Nottingham Forest shows just how wasteful a move or the wrong club can be. With a plethora of career roadblocks already behind him, Gio would do best to make a decision that benefits his playing time and allows him to join a club that gives his positive attributes the ability to flourish.
