Borussia Dortmund benefitted greatly in terms of signings over the course of the winter transfer window, with both the loan of Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen helping to steady the ship a bit. A percent dew for the latter seems to be a top priority for Dortmund, per reports.

In an interview with Voetbal International, Ian Maatsen’s father, Edward Maatsen, has highlighted that Dortmund and Chelsea are working on a deal that will see Maatsen stay for the long haul:

"We are working on him staying at the club [Borussia Dortmund]. The clubs have to work it out between themselves. lan is developing well here."

It’s no secret that Maatsen has taken a great step in his career since joining Dortmund, going from being a bit part player at Chelsea to a nailed-on starter when fit with BVB. He’s reached quite a few milestones, including scoring his first Champions League goal vs Atletico Madrid in the return leg in Dortmund.

The situation is not 100% clarified, however, as there are financial details for the clubs to agree on. Maatsen’s father highlighted this, saying that in the event that the clubs can’t agree, his son does have other options:

"A lot of things at the club revolve around money…We have other options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund has proven to be a good step."

It would be in both Dortmund’s and Maatsen’s best interests to have Chelsea and Die Schwarzgelben find common ground in making the deal permanent. Maatsen has settled very well a continues to recommend himself as an important component of the team as a very solid, all-rounder of a modern fullback.
