In the advent of Borussia Dortmund’s 4-2 win vs Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, they have reached a peak they have not stood on in the competition since the Jürgen Klopp era. Despite their struggles in the Bundesliga, BVB have found themselves in the final four of Europe’s elite football competition.

The fallout from reaching these lofty heights has seemingly affected BVB's ideas in terms of hiring a new coach in the summer. In the last few months, Borussia Dortmund have been heavily rumored to be looking for a new coach, due to the team’s heavily criticized under-performance this season. Edin Terzic has been in the hot seat for most of the season, with many unimpressed with how the club had been performing.

The one competition where Borussia Dortmund have outright excelled is the UEFA Champions League. The semifinal position they find themselves in came after they topped a group that included the likes of Newcastle, PSG and AC Milan, which was very much considered the group of death. Dortmund have also taken out PSV Eindhoven, and now Atletico Madrid on their path towards what would be their second Champions League final at Wembley; the last being their 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich in 2013.

Reaching the Champions League semifinals is clearly one of the club’s highest achievements of the last decade, and it seems to have worked out in favor of Terzic. Ruhr Nachrichten have reported that the club will not look for a new coach, even in the event that Champions League football is not assured.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has remained tight lipped on the situation, but did offer his thoughts on the season as a whole, which he states hasn’t been as bad as has been portrayed:

"This season is nowhere near as bad as it’s been written about everywhere. This season is a special case where five clubs are doing very well. If Germany gets five places [in the Champions League] and we come fifth, that’s ok. In the end, what matters to me is that we are there."
