Sebastian Kehl has given his backing to Emre Can, who has been subjected to some criticism from supporters in recent months.
Emre Can was left out of the Borussia Dortmund starting XI for Friday's match against FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga. He then came off the bench and scored a penalty, before celebrating by making the shush gesture and then cupping his ears.
"I'm completely behind him" - Sebastian Kehl on Emre Can
Can has had to deal with plenty of criticism of late, and remains a controversial figure among the supporters, with some fans frustrated by his rather pragmatic playing style and lack of dynamism on the ball. But the 30 year old retains the support of Sebastian Kehl.
During his appearance on Sky 90 on Sunday evening, the former BVB midfielder and current sporting director backed Can to come good this season. "I'm completely behind him - he's our captain. I can't understand these discussions. Of course it also affects a player who tries to stand up for this club with hard work."
"Emre has tremendous support in the dressing room. We will need his mentality. We need mature players who see the big picture."
Borussia Dortmund signed Emre Can from Juventus in 2020, and the midfielder has made a total of 163 appearances for the club. His future at BVB came into doubt last year. But days later, he signed a contract extension until 2026 and was also appointed the club captain.
Now, after being left out of the starting XI, Can will hope to force his way back into the team in the coming matches.
