Borussia Dortmund fell to a disastrous 5-1 defeat to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday evening. The Black and Yellows had the opportunity to showcase their title Bundesliga credentials. Instead, they were unable to keep up with the home side and suffered a loss that will take some time to recover from.
Sebastian Kehl on Borussia Dortmund's performance against Stuttgart
For BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl, the team's performance was inexplicable. He said after the game that every player in the squad must take a good look at themselves and reflect on how such a performance happened. "What we delivered, what we did on the pitch for the most part, is inexplicable and must not happen to us," Kehl said (via Ruhr Nachrichten).
"Every player should be angry about the way we performed. Everyone should take a good look at themselves and think about how such a performance can come about. Apart from a small number of players, I hardly saw anyone who was anywhere near their usual form and gave the impression that they wanted to win this game."
The defeat was Borussia Dortmund's fourth in a row to VfB Stuttgart. It also came less than four years after BVB were beaten by the same scoreline by the Swabians - the game that marked the end of Lucien Favre's tenure as BVB head coach.
Borussia Dortmund now find themselves in eighth place in the Bundesliga table with seven points from their opening four matches. Nuri Sahin's side will hope to recover from this defeat quickly and return to winning ways on Friday when they take on local rivals VfL Bochum at home.
