Serhou Guirassy scored the winning goal as Borussia Dortmund came up empty-handed in their Bundesliga top four six-pointer against VfB Stuttgart.

Borussia Dortmund were beaten by VfB Stuttgart for the third time this season, with Serhou Guirassy once again coming up clutch for the Swabians. It was a frustrating evening for the Black and Yellows, as they marked the occasion of the Westfalenstadion's 50th anniversary with a defeat that will sting for a while.

There wasn't much to separate the two teams over the course of the 90 minutes, even if Borussia Dortmund had the better chances. But Stuttgart took full advantage of the home side's wastefulness in front of goal and boosted their own hopes of playing Champions League football next season.

The occasion was a momentous one for Borussia Dortmund, and the fans were in fine voice as they celebrated the 50th birthday of the Westfalenstadion. On the pitch, it was a fiery game from the outset and neither side was looking to give the other an inch. BVB put in a disciplined shift in the first-half and did a much better job of containing the Stuttgart attack than in the previous two meetings between the two clubs this season.

Karim Adeyemi had the best opportunity of the first 45 minutes, but the Borussia Dortmund forward failed to beat Alexander Nübel after going clean through on goal.

The game continued in a similar vein after the break, before Serhou Guirassy finally broke the deadlock in the 64th minute at the end of a swift counter-attack.

Borussia Dortmund went all in as they searched for an equalising goal. And a golden opportunity fell to Nico Schlotterbeck in the 80th minute. But he fluffed his lines and fired his shot over the bar from three yards out after Jadon Sancho's initial effort was saved.

Ultimately, it was Borussia Dortmund's lack of efficiency in the final third that proved to be costly as they dropped precious points in the race to finish in the top four.

The result sees Borussia Dortmund drop down to fifth place thanks to RB Leipzig's superior goal difference. And things do not get any easier for Edin Terzic, with a trip to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals next on the agenda.
