Emre Can's disappointing season after becoming Borussia Dortmund catpain

When it comes to the majority of BVB fans, though, Can has always failed to fully convince. Many people questioned why he was made captain because they believed he isn't good enough to be a regular starter.

Even though Can is a versatile player who can offer good protection for the back-line, he is also prone to making errors as we saw time and again in the recently concluded season. He was culpable of misplacing passes and making careless decisions under the opposition press.

While he does have some good leadership qualities and experience, and also played a crucial role in the crunch knockout games in the Champions League, he was also at the heart of the problems BVB encountered in the league. Just like the team, he often struggled when the Black and Yellows came up against teams that defended deep. And his resistance against pressing also left a lot to be desired.

As compared to players in the top five leagues over the past year, Can’s progressive passes and carries rank at 50 and 49 percentile according to fbref. While his goal and assist contributions are well below average. Even though he excelled in defensive attributes, like tackles and clearances, his style of play doesn’t seem well suited for a club like BVB.
