The Borussia Dortmund Benchwarmer’s Playbook
By Joseph Meyer
The new season is upon us, and with it, one of the most rebuilt Borussia Dortmund squads in recent memory. Mats Hummels and Marco Reus have moved on, a new coach has taken the helm with a new outlook and fresh ideas, but perhaps most notable has been the flurry of incoming players to bolster the BVB squad.
While adding stronger players increases the overall depth of the team, certain players will find themselves stuck to the bench this season, overlooked by coaches and fans alike. But I’m suggesting there’s some hope for every member of the senior squad, should they take the right steps to prove themselves to the Borussia Dortmund hierarchy and fan scene alike.
Nuri Sahin has said that no player will be an automatic starter, and they have to earn their place. The BVB head coach has also expressed his desire to develop young talents like Julien Duranville and Kjell Wätjen. This leaves certain players in a limbo, unable to identify as the past, present, or even the future of the BVB squad. But some may still have the opportunity to showcase their talent and prove they deserve a place in Borussia Dortmund’s squad. Others should seek an exit in everyone’s best interest.
