The Gio Reyna enigma: Trying to understand the USMNT star's struggles in club football

Gio Reyna is just 21 and regularly showcases his incredible talent for the USMNT, but his story at the club level is far from similar.

Now back to Borussia Dortmund; where do we go from here? Gio currently has a contract with the Black and Yellows until 2026. This puts the club in a good position to do one of a few things.

They could sell Gio as part of their summer rebuild, but he’d surely go for a discounted rate unless he has a crazy turnaround at Nottingham Forest. BVB could simply hold onto the talent and let him continue warming them bench. Or, they could plan their squad next season with Reyna in mind, incorporating him into a regular place in the squad while further developing him. I think you can figure out which option I’d prefer.

At the end of the day, Borussia Dortmund holds the signature of an immensely talented young player who is only beginning to show what he’s capable of. Someone needs to have some faith in this kid and let him be the star that he’s meant to be.

My hope is that Borussia Dortmund back the young American because he has the potential to be an integral part of this squad, and his best years are ahead of him. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl has repeatedly emphasized Dortmund’s desire to sign ‘difference makers’ this coming summer. Well, there is a difference maker already on the BVB books, and he will shine bright if given the opportunity.
