A new system?

The system used by Nuri Sahin on Friday was a lot less direct than what Borussia Dortmund fans became accustomed to last season. No balls were played to the head in central areas. BVB looked to find numerical advantages in the midfield to allow the free midfielder to carry forward and distribute wide to attackers.

While Terzic relied on direct balls into strikers, more controlled play is likely to be seen this year. This was also on display in the final third as more cut-backs were attempted than deep crosses.

There were still some issues, as for instance Bynoe-Gittens for the first time played with an over-lapping full-back in Tom Rothe, but continuously played as if Maatsen were still underlapping.

Bynoe-Gittens still impressed as he often was able to dribble through three amateurs at a time but was caught in possession more times than you might like. If Rothe is given a chance in the first-team, whoever plays on the left wing will need to utilize his attacking strengths rather than dribbling into corners and using him to reset the ball.
