Facing Union Berlin, there could be a fair amount of criticism directed towards Yan, but it should not be an overreaction as the whole team underperformed against Die Eisernen. The first goal originated from a penalty that happened in Yan's sector of the pitch; however, the counter-attack initially occurred due to Beier's missed pass in the attack. Considering that non-forced mistake from Dortmund's young attacker, Yan and the defensive system were caught off guard.

In regards to the second goal, it starts with a rebound of a corner that ends up at the feet of Vertessen to shot from outside the box. Couto was the closest player in that area, but he is not tall enough to man-marked corner kicks. Therefore, he should have been the responsible to cover that sector and try to quell any shots from rebounds. Certainly, an avoidable mistake, but not one that should massively detract from Yan's good moments for Dortmund in the last three games.

Overall, Yan Couto's journey with Borussia Dortmund has started promisingly and has given many reasons for fans to believe he would be a worthy investment. There are still a few aspects that could improve, indeed, while he continues to adapt to a new environment and a completely different league than he is used to. But, even if it takes time, the young Brazilian has a lot of talent that could eventually allow him to enter the club's pantheon of Brazilian legends.
