Marin Pongračic (2021-2022 (on loan from Wolfsburg))

Marco Rose and Marin Pongračic had a successful stint at RB Salzburg, but they only stayed for a season at Dortmund. While Rose’s sacking felt a bit harsh, there was no surprise when the club decided to not sign the underperforming centre-back permanently.

Pongračic only made 9 Bundesliga starts for Dortmund, and he also had no future at his parent club Wolfsburg. He regained his form at Serie A outfit Lecce to earn another big move to Fiorentina last summer.

Honorable mentions

Rose also called up his namesake, Marco Pašalić, from the second team for the 2021 DFL-Supercup. Blighted by a serious injury, Pašalić only went on to make one Bundesliga appearance before joining HNK Rijeka in 2023.

Furthermore, two Croatians departed Dortmund in the summer. Stuttgart-born center-back Mario Suver left the second team to join Croatia’s second-tier club NK Rudes, while Noa-Gabriel Simic joined 3. Liga club Unterhaching from Dortmund U19.
