Germany suffered an embarrassing defeat to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32 of the World Cup. Julian Nagelsmann's obvious successor is former Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp.

Fabrizio Romano posted on X: "Klopp would be open to considering return to management if German Federation decide to call him. Nagelsmann wants to stay but final decision in DFB hands, Klopp would be open to listening and keen on project."

Nagelsmann is contracted to Germany until after Euro 2028. However, the DFB may feel that his position is untenable following the recent World Cup failure. He does not have a bad record with Germany overall, with 23 wins, six draws and eight defeats.

Major tournaments are where international coaches are judged. In his only other major tournament in charge of Germany, Nagelsmann got them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, which they were hosting, where they lost to eventual winners Spain.

He was a highly rated coach when he was with Hoffenheim. RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich. He took Hoffenheim from a club threatened with relegation to one that qualified for the Champions League. With Leipzig, he got to a Champions League semi-final. At Bayern, he won the Bundesliga and two DFB-Supercups. Nagelsmann would no doubt get another top European club job if he were fired by Germany.

Jürrgen Klopp is the man Germany needs

Klopp managed the team he played for, Mainz, and got them promoted to the Bundesliga. However, it was with Dortmund that he made his name as a manager. With the Black and Yellow, he won two Bundesliga titles, the DFB-Pokal, and two DFL-Supercups. He also took Dortmund to a Champions League final.

He then managed Liverpool and won them their first Premier League title. He also claimed the Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup and the Super Cup.

Klopp left Liverpool in 2024, saying that he had run out of energy. He has since become head of global soccer at Red Bull, where he oversaw all of the drinks brand's clubs. This was not a popular move with some Dortmund fans who are opposed to Red Bull's ownership of teams.

International soccer is not as gruelling as the club game. As a manager, you do not have to work with a squad day in and day out. You also do not have to deal with transfers. Klopp may have run out of gas when it comes to managing Liverpool. However, the Germany job could be a good fit for him. He has won all there is to win at the club level, so all that is missing is a major international trophy with Germany.
