Ryerson has been a surprisingly great set piece taker

While watching the Champions League matchup against Shakhtar this week, an unlikely scene was evident in the set pieces. Julian Ryerson was responsible for the set piece taking in Borussia Dortmund in that game, which was odd for most BVB fans. That pattern repeated itself against Heidenheim.

However, Ryerson proved himself to be a reliable player in set pieces and corners, bringing danger to the opponents' box at most attempts. Even with other players in the squad who are most notably known for their good performance in taking set pieces, like Julian Brandt and Pascal Groß, Ryerson surprisingly has become an effective candidate for that role.

With decent accuracy in crosses, long balls, and big chances created, Ryerson had a prominent week with solid performances, showcasing he has talents that most BVB fans were not aware of even with the Norwegian two years at the club. Ryerson doesn't need to be the official set piece and corner taker from now on. Still, he can indeed become an alternative, proving it is possible to optimize a player's skillset mid-career.
