Among the players likely to leave this summer, there is one in particular candidate for sale which will disappoint any United States Men’s National Team fans: That’s Giovanni Reyna. While the American’s talent for his country is undisputed, the lad has struggled to find consistency with Borussia Dortmund, and has warmed the bench for most of this season.
The American was believed to have high potential, as his market value sky-rocketed through his teenaged years, peaking at 42-million euros when he was just 19, according to Transfermarkt. But three years later, Gio Reyna has only played 341 league minutes in his most recent Bundesliga campaign, and the 22-year-old’s transfer value has plummeted to just 10-million euros. He’s become yet another candidate in the list of midfielders Borussia Dortmund hope to offload this summer. But who might come calling?
While a move to the English Premier League seems unlikely due to his poor loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season, but Sky journalist, Patrick Berger reports that Spanish side Real Sociedad are interested in the American’s talents, while no other concrete links have materialized.
Gio Reyna could follow in fellow Americans, Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie by seeking a transfer to the Italian Seria A, or he could find reasonable minutes in League One also. Reyna could be attracted to return home, where he’d be most likely to become a star: Major League Soccer.
Either way, the most important thing for Gio Reyna is consistent minutes, so he can showcase his form and get noticed by USMNT trainer, Mauricio Pochettino. It would be incredibly sad to see Gio miss out on the World cup in his home country.
