Neven Subotic's peak ended in 2014 and was solely a back at Dortmund until moving to Saint-Etienne in France in 2017. He also suited up for Union Berlin, Denizlispor in Turkey and Rheindorf Altach in Austria. He announced his retirement in 2021 and decided to focus on his foundation.
Subotic is busy running his non-profit organization called Well:Fair Foundation, which aims to provide clean running water in African countries, such as Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania. He's also a published author of the book called "Giving Everything," which tells his story of being a Serbian refugee and turning into a pro athlete.
DF - Mats Hummels
The other half of Dortmund's centerback line, Mats Hummels stayed with the club until 2016, when he made the shock return to Bayern Munich. He would transfer back to BVB in 2019, helping the Black and Yellow reach the 2024 Champions League Final. He spent his final season in Italy playing for Roma last season.
After announcing his retirement, Hummels played one more exhibition game for Dortmund during the preseason against Juventus. He then accepted a pundit role for Amazon Prime Video, covering the UEFA Champions League.
DF - Chris Lowe
Probably only die-hard BVB supporters would remember Chris Lowe, the backup left back from 2011 to 2013. He moved around after Dortmund, playing for Kaiserslautern, Huddersfield Town, Dynamo Dresden and boyhood club, Chemnitzer FC. He retired in March 2024.
Lowe would remain at Chemnitzer, becoming the club's Sporting Director five months after his retirement. He's tasked with bringing the Sky Blues back into the 3. Liga.
DF - Patrick Owomoyela
A well-beloved member of Dortmund, Patrick Owomoyela stayed with the Black and Yellows until 2013, moving to Hamburg the following season, in what would be his last as a pro. He then returned to Dortmund to become a brand ambassador and has represented the club locally and internationally.
DF - Lukasz Piszczek
One of the greatest players in Dortmund history, Lukasz Piszczek stayed with the club until 2021. He moved back home to Poland and played for his boyhood club, Goczalkowice-Zdroj. He retired in 2024 and became part of Nuri Sahin's coaching staff last season.
However, his stint with BVB as an assistant didn't last long after Sahin's firing. He returned to
Goczalkowice-Zdroj and unretired to become the club's player-manager. At the age of 40, "Piszczu" is still playing the sport he loves for his team that shaped him in his youth.
