Despite making 26 appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season, Marcel Sabitzer’s future is far from certain. The Austrian played a vital role in Dortmund’s charge to the UEFA Champions League final last season, and many of us remember the exciting scene from his game-altering goal against Atletico Madrid in the Quarterfinals. Sabitzer was a core member of Edin Terzic’s squad, but his performances tanked under Nuri Sahin.
Marcel Sabitzer’s woes were compounded after an injury sustained early in Niko Kovač’s tenure. While several Borussia Dortmund players underperformed under Nuri Sahin, Marcel Sabitzer still struggled adapting to Kovac’s system, especially when the Croat was first appointed. That being said, Sabitzer did show up in the final games of the season when he was needed. He played wells against Bayer Leverkusen, and he scored his first of the season against Holstein Keil on the final matchday. But was this brief resurgence enough to earn his stay under Niko Kovač?
All of this leaves Sabitzer in something of a transfer limbo with sporting tabloid Sport Bild reporting that Borussia Dortmund could push for a transfer this summer. The biggest problem in this idea however, is the lack of interested parties willing to take a chance on Sabitzer, who has had a very inconsistent career, shining in Leipzig and flopping at both Bayern Munich and Manchester United. For Dortmund, he’s done both.
Marcel Sabitzer's contract runs through the 2026-27 season and his current market value is 10-million euros according to Transfermarkt. He's made 51 appearances in all competitions for BVB, scoring 5 times.
