There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to who hosts the DFL-Supercup, since the competition was reintroduced in 2009. The fixture is always played at the home of one of the two clubs involved.

This year, Borussia Dortmund are the hosts. It will be the seventh Supercup at Westfalenstadion 2013, albeit the first since 2021, all of which have been against Bayern.

Why are Borussia Dortmund playing Bayern Munich in the Supercup?

Bayern Munich won last season's domestic double in Germany. Vincent Kompany's team finished 16 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, landing the club's 35th Meisterschale, before beating Stuttgart 3-0 in the DFB-Pokal Final; Harry Kane bagging a hat-trick at the Olympiastadion.

This was Bayern's 14th double, 12 of which have come this century, but the first time they have achieved this since 2020. Thus, Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund have been invited to take part.

Nico Schlotterbeck is sidelined long-term due to a medial ankle ligament injury sustained during the World Cup, while Emre Can is also injured. Thus, defender Joane Gadou, who has arrived from RB Salzburg for around €19 million, is set to debut at the back.

The new recruit Dortmund fans are most exciting to see though is Konstantinos Karetsas. The teenager has arrived from Genk for €30 million, having scored six goals and registered 23 assists during his time in Belgium. Karetsas also scored three times for Greece during 2025, two of which were against Scotland, and is one of the highest-rated young wingers on the planet.

Borussia Dortmund predicted XI vs Bayern Munich: Kobel; Gadou, Mané, Bensebaïni; Ryerson, Bellingham, Nmecha, Svensson; Karetsas, Inácio, Guirassy.

How important is winning the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup?

Bayern Munich have won seven of the last nine Supercups they have been involved in. One of their two defeats in the last decade did come against Borussia Dortmund in 2019, with Paco Alcácer and Jadon Sancho on target during a 2-0 victory for Lucien Favre's side.

That game Dortmund fans hope that they could challenge for the title, but ultimately finished 13 points below Bayern. Niko Kovač was the Bayern boss that day, and is now in the opposite dugout. It is a tall order to imagine die Borussen genuinely coming close to winning either the Bundesliga or Champions League, so this is a route to silverware, as well as an early psychological statement that they are a force.

  • Score prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Bayern Munich.
