Borussia Dortmund survived another scare against Werder Bremen to win 3-2 in their second-round tie of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday.
Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring for them in the sixth minute while Carney Chukwuemeka doubled their advantage another 11 minutes later as the BVB led 2-0 at the break.
However, Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench to score twice in the 65th and 68th minute to wipe out Dortmund's lead and bring Bremen level, just as he did 18 days ago in their league encounter.
But this time around, the Black and Yellow were able to dig themselves out of this with a late winner, as Marcel Sabitzer powered home a sensational free-kick to make it 3-2 in the dying seconds.
As Borussia Dortmund now prepare to learn their opponents for the Round of 16, here are 10 key stats from the clash:
1) With the win over Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund have now progressed beyond the second round of the DFB-Pokal in every season except one (2024-25).
2) The win over Werder Bremen also ended Borussia Dortmund's three-game losing streak against the side in the domestic cup; Bremen had previously knocked them out in 2009, 2019 and 2020 - all coming in the Round of 16.
3) For the second game in a row against Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund let slip a 2-0 lead; they previously conceded two goals after going two-nil up on 9 October in their Bundesliga clash.
4) Since the start of last season, the BVB have relinquished a 2-0 lead on four occasions in all competitions; in total, there have been six times where they let slip a two-goal advantage.
5) Niko Kovac's side won their third game in a row, all by a single goal margin: 2-1 vs Sabah FK (Champions League), 1-0 vs Eintracht Frankfurt (Bundesliga) and 3-2 vs Werder Bremen (DFB-Pokal).
6) Serhou Guirassy bagged his second goal in the DFB-Pokal since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2024; his only other strike was against Rot-Weiss Essen in the first round last year.
7) Marcel Sabitzer scored his first goal of the season here, while it was also his first strike for Dortmund since January 2026 (also againt Werder Bremen); it was only his second German Cup goal with the BVB as the Austrian's only prior goal in the competition came against Schlott Mainz in the first round of the 2023-24 season.
8) This was the fifth consecutive game in all competitions where Borussia Dortmund scored at least twice against Werder Bremen.
9) Having avoided a loss here, the Prussians have extended their unbeaten record to four games now.
10) Julian Ryerson has four assists in the DFB-Pokal this season; he only had one last season.
