Defensive Midfield: Thiago, Axel Witsel

Thiago was once again a vital cog in Bayern’s title win and stamped his authority in the heart of their midfield. The Spaniard’s creativity, his incredible passing range and his defensive ability were in full show throughout the season, and he did everything with great precision and composure. Thiago is a delight to watch whenever he plays, and he is undeniably a player who makes Bayern tick.

Joining Thiago in the heart of the midfield is Borussia Dortmund’s Axel Witsel. Following his summer move from China, Witsel slotted into the Dortmund midfield so effortlessly and quickly became the engine behind their success. The Belgian international does all the little things and rarely ever gives the ball away. He is composed, calm and dominates the game at his own pace, always knowing what to do next.  While he began to tire towards the end of the season, Witsel deserves his place in this team, as without him, there would have been no title challenge for Borussia Dortmund.

Other notable mentions include Kerem Demirbay, Leon Goretzka and Makoto Hasebe.
