The decision on whether or not the Bundesliga will restart in May will be made next week, and May 22 could be a realistic start date if the league gets the go ahead to return to action.

DFL managing director Christian Seifert confirmed last week that the Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga are ready to return if the political decision makers decide that it is safe for them to do so. The German leaders will meet on May 6 when the detailed proposal to restart the two leagues will be presented.

Angela Merkel’s federal government and the leaders of the state governments held a video meeting on Thursday, but no definite decision was taken on whether or not German football should restart. That decision will now be made on May 6. According to Kicker, if the Bundesliga does get the green light, May 22 or May 29 would be the realistic starting dates in order to give teams adequate time to prepare for the restart.

The DFL intend to complete the remaining nine match-days by June 30, but it remains to be seen if that will be possible anymore. If football in Germany does return in May, all matches will have to be played behind closed doors.

Hans Joachim Watzke said last week that ghost games are important for the existence of the Bundesliga, saying, “If we don’t play in the next few months & the season is cancelled, then the Bundesliga will no longer exist in the form we have come to know.”

It was confirmed earlier by the DFL that they have begun testing players of the top two divisions of German football for coronavirus starting from Thursday, with each player and member of coaching staff set to be tested up to twice a week.
