Sebastian Kehl is in line to replace Michael Zorc as the new Borussia Dortmund sporting director, when the latter retires in 2022.
Michael Zorc recently signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund, which will keep him at the club until 2022. But the 57 year old is expected to retire when his contract expires. And according to Kicker, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Sebastian Kehl will become the new sporting director when Zorc retires in two years’ time.
Zorc has been at Borussia Dortmund since joining the club as a 16 year old in 1978. After an illustrious playing career, he was named the club’s sporting director when he retired in 1998. During his time as sporting director, Zorc has played an instrumental role in building some really exciting Dortmund squads over the years.
Sebastian Kehl joined Borussia Dortmund in 2002, and won three Bundesliga titles during his 13 year career with the Black and Yellows. The former Dortmund captain returned to the club to become the head of licensed players department in 2018. He currently acts as a link between the team and the board.
His contract is currently due to expire in 2021, and Kicker claim that he will sign only a one year extension in his current role. Signs are growing that he will take over as the Borussia Dortmund sporting director when Michael Zorc steps down in 2022.
Michael Zorc has established himself as one of the world’s best sporting directors, so replacing him certainly won’t be an easy task. But hopefully, after working with Zorc for four years, Kehl will be ready to take on the role when the time comes.
