Reports in France say that Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Memphis Depay, and have already made contact with the Dutchman’s entourage.
According to L’Equipe, Borussia Dortmund want Depay to be Jadon Sancho’s successor if the latter leaves the club to join Manchester United this summer. The newspaper reports that the Black and Yellows have already made contact with the entourage of the 26 year old, although no offer has been submitted yet to Olympique Lyonnais.
Depay has less than one year remaining on his Lyon contract, and L’Equipe claim that he has no intention of signing an extension with the French club, who finished seventh in the Ligue 1 season. Premier League side Everton are also interested in signing the Dutch international, but cannot offer European football next season.
Depay scored 14 goals in provided two assists in 19 appearances in all competitions last season, including five goals in five Champions League appearances. He suffered a cruciate ligament injury in December, but made his return to the team in the Coupe De La Ligue final defeat to PSG last week. He will also play for Lyon in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Juventus on Friday.
Borussia Dortmund would only be interested in signing Depay if Manchester United meet their asking price of 120 million euros for Jadon Sancho. However, BVB bosses Michael Zorc and Hans Joachim Watzke poured cold water over the rumours yesterday, claiming that no talks have taken place between the two clubs over the Englishman’s signature.
Depay is a versatile forward who is capable of playing both on the wing and through the middle in the number ten role, and even as the lone striker. The former PSV and Manchester United man has also earned 51 caps for the Dutch national team.
