Mario Götze has revealed that was in talks to join Bayern Munich after leaving Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer.
Mario Götze left Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer at the end of last season after the two parties could not agree to terms on a new contract. After being linked with a number of clubs from different leagues, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winner decided to join Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. Götze says that after struggling for game time at Borussia Dortmund, he has found his happiness once again in the Eredivisie. Speaking to SportBILD, Götze said:
"“You can tell that pretty easily from my playing time. In January, it was a two. Now it’s a nine, and on the way to 10. On the one hand, because I am playing almost every game. And on the other hand, because we are doing very well in every competition. This combination gives me a very good feeling.”"
Götze was also asked about the rumours linking him with a move to Bayern Munich, and confirmed that he held talks with the club’s honorary president Uli Hoeness over a proposed move in the summer. But a return to Bavaria never materialised, and the attacking midfielder ended up joining PSV Eindhoven on a two year deal.
"“In the summer we spoke openly about my future, about Bayern’s plans. They said that they value me as a person and a player and that they could have taken me back to Bayern again.”"
Götze has made an impressive start to life in the Netherlands, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 13 appearances in all competitions for Roger Schmidt’s side. While the 28 year old is happy with PSV, he refused to rule out a return to the Bundesliga in the future.
"“I don’t want to rule out a return to the Bundesliga. Both options are conceivable for me. But now I’m in Eindhoven and I’m fully focused on our goals.”"
Götze began his professional career at Borussia Dortmund, before Bayern Munich signed him in 2013 after paying his release clause of 37 million euros. He returned to Dortmund in 2016, and had he joined Bayern again in the summer, it certainly wouldn’t have gone down well with the Borussia Dortmund supporters.
