Borussia Dortmund player ratings vs Wolfsburg: Akanji, Sancho score to seal vital 2-0 win
By Tushar Bahl
Thomas Meunier (4.5/10)
Meunier had another poor game on both ends of the pitch. He gave the ball away near the edge of the Dortmund box early on, but luckily for him Wolfsburg couldn’t take advantage. He was often too slow going forward and his forward passes were inaccurate more often than not. He was slightly better defensively in the second half, but didn’t offer anything in attack.
Manuel Akanji (8.5/10)
Manuel Akanji hardly put a foot wrong and made the difference on both ends of the pitch for Borussia Dortmund. He kept the dangerous Wout Weghorst quiet and never gave him even an inch of space. And he also scored the opening goal in the second half with a fine header into the bottom corner. He also played some impressive line-breaking balls forward from defence, and completed all but two of his passes.
Mats Hummels (7/10)
While Hummels was outshone by Akanji, he still put in a very impressive shift at the back. The former German international made several vital last-ditch interceptions and blocks for his side, including one early on which prevented Gerhardt from scoring.
Raphael Guerreiro (6/10)
Guerreiro set up the second half chance for Haaland, which forced a fine save from Casteels. He wasn’t at his best going forward, but still managed to cause a few problems to the Wolfsburg back-line. He did not do a lot wrong defensively, even though he did leave a bit too much space at times on Wolfsburg’s right wing.
