Jadon Sancho (5/10)

Sancho showed glimpses of his quality in the first half, and set up a couple of good chances for his teammates. But he struggled to get going after the break and made too many wrong decisions in and around the final third.

Marco Reus (4/10)

Reus was very active in the first half and should have made it 1-0 after going through on goal in the 26th minute. He had a tough time in the second half, and gave the ball away in the build-up to Mainz’ opener before missing the penalty which would have given Borussia Dortmund the lead.

Julian Brandt (5/10)

Much like the rest of his teammates, Brandt showed promise in the first half. He looked lively, pressed high up the pitch and came close to scoring twice. But he fell back into his old lacklustre ways in the second half and failed to find a Dortmund teammate with any of his crosses. He certainly needs to do more if he wants to start regularly.

Erling Haaland (5/10)

Haaland found the back of the net in just the second minute, but his goal was ruled out by VAR. That was as good as it got for the Norwegian international, who wasn’t able to make his mark on the game. He only touched the ball 16 times and the game simply passed him by.
