By Tushar Bahl
Steffen Tigges is reportedly set for his first professional contract with Borussia Dortmund. According to Ruhr Nachrichten, the Black and Yellows have reached an agreement in principle with the towering striker over a contract extension, which will keep him at the club until 2024.
Tigges made his professional debut for Borussia Dortmund last month. After an encouraging display, he was promoted to the first team by head coach Edin Terzic. His contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but now it looks like he will be getting an extension.
Tigges joined Borussia Dortmund II from VfL Osnabrück in 2019 and instantly became an important player for the team. He scored nine goals and provided ten assists in his debut season with the BVB U23s, and his performances saw him earn a place in the senior squad for the January 2020 mid-season training camp in Marbella.
The striker has continued his excellent form this season, leading the promotion charge for the BVB U-23s’. He has 12 goals and seven assists to his name in just 18 appearances in the Regionalliga West this season.
Steffen Tigges gives Borussia Dortmund important depth up front
Tigges’ impressive performances for the Borussia Dortmund U-23s helped him earn his first team debut in the DFB-Pokal second round tie against Eintracht Braunschweig last month. He has since made three Bundesliga appearances as a substitute, and recently earned praise from sporting director Michael Zorc.
It remains to be seen whether Tigges will stay with the first team permanently. But with Borussia Dortmund facing a packed schedule, the 22 year old is a reliable option to have in the squad when Erling Haaland and Youssoufa Moukoko need a rest.
