Borussia Dortmund have slipped to seventh place in the Bundesliga table after suffering back to back defeats against top four rivals Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach. But the Black and Yellows have no plans to be active in the transfer window this month, Michael Zorc has confirmed. Speaking to WAZ (subscription required), the Borussia Dortmund sporting director said that signing a new player will not change anything if the team keeps conceding cheap goals from set-pieces.

"“The players we have are good enough,” Zorc said. “We have to get them in good shape and ensure that they make fewer mistakes. If I now bring in another player and concede two goals through set pieces again, it won’t change anything.”"

Borussia Dortmund had a busy January last year, signing Erling Haaland and Emre Can to bolster the squad. But the impact of COVID-19 on the club’s finances has meant that they simply do not have the money to make new signings this month.

Fans have called for Borussia Dortmund to sign a new centre-back in recent weeks, with only two fit centre-backs available in the first team at the moment. But with just over a week to go before transfer deadline day, there isn’t expected to be much movement at Borussia Dortmund. Mahmoud Dahoud has been linked with a move away from Dortmund, but it remains to be seen if he will be allowed to leave this month.

Michael Zorc criticises Borussia Dortmund’s defending from set-pieces

Michael Zorc was also critical of Borussia Dortmund’s defending, especially from set-pieces. The former BVB captain felt that they are making things too easy for their opponents at the moment.

"“We are not focused enough, not strong enough in our defensive work. And that’s why we concede easy goals. Cross, header, goal – bang, and you’re already behind. We make a huge effort to score goals on the other end and at the same time we make it too easy for our opponents.”"
